As part of the Independent Fashion Bloggers (IFB) community, I stumbled upon their most recent project: Independence. In case you aren’t a member or have never heard of IFB, let me first give you a little background. Their most recent project entails the theme of independence, that is, what we feel makes us independent – even more specifically, an item that makes us feel this way – “like an amazing pair of shoes or a vibrant lipstick color.” I really love this idea, because I definitely do believe that a certain item, just like an event, can make us feel powerful, free, and self-sufficient. However, it still took me a while to figure out what item of mine makes me feel liberated – I feel like I have so many pieces that can do this to me.
Send The Trend once asked on their Twitter what single item defines our personal style and I replied “I never thought of having a single piece to define my personal style. My pieces vary and I feel like that is what defines it!” It’s the same deal for this – I have tons of items in my closet that I can pick out and think “Hey! That makes me feel fantastic!” A few years back when I wore uniform to my private high school, I still felt the need to dress it up with colorful knee high socks, jewelry, scarves, and all sorts of crazy accessories just to make myself feel independent and stand out a little more than everyone else (even though I still feel that’s why they changed the dress code to no colorful socks/extra accessories… oops – at least I made a statement!)
When it comes down to it, I realized that the one item – or rather, collection of items – that make me feel absolutely, 100%, no doubt about it confident, strong, liberated, and happy are my Betsey Johnson pieces (specifically, the dresses). You don’t even have to add – although, definitely feel free to of course – the extra accessory to complete the look since the garment is already a complete masterpiece!
The fact that owning a Betsey piece has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl is pretty much reason enough. When you put one on though, you instantly feel like your own version of a princess has come alive inside – whether girly or rocker-chic – and a confident and independent aura manifests like you never thought could be possible. Working as a stylist at Betsey and dressing up in the clothes has made me feel more independent than ever; I love seeing girls so happy when putting on their favorite Betsey pieces. They, like I, really do give off this confident and powerful vibe when walking out of that fitting room.
I mean… look at Betsey herself: she comes forward with these incredible showcases of “Look at me! I’m wearing 5 different colors and patterns and I really don’t care!” Any piece that makes you feel like that, I feel, should be your IT independent piece!
