Superhero Chic

Otakon is this weekend and I simply cannot wait! If you’re unfamiliar with what it is, Otakon is a fan convention – second biggest in the U.S. – focusing on East Asian popular culture such as Anime, Manga, music and cinema as well as several other themes and subcultures people embody their lifestyles into (like Steampunk, Dieselpunk, and comics.) I’m heavily inspired by anything that has some sort of fashion sense, and comic books and superheroes are no exception! In excitement and anticipation of the convention, I thought I would share a few female superheroes and their stylish – yes, stylish – looks and how you can recreate their outfits to modern day wear. I had so much fun putting these together – I feel like dedicating an entire week to dressing like a superhero… I’m serious.

Before I share the looks, you may wonder how superheroes can even be thought of as stylish or have any sense of fashion. Well, if Tim Gunn (self professed nerd) can vividly review several superhero costumes, you know they can and do have a sense of style. Tim Gunn is one of the few honest fashion moguls in the industry, as he isn’t afraid to poke fun at anything, even himself. He offers some very interesting insights on superhero costumes and iconic imagery, as well as specific points about female and male portrayal in comics. View the entire interview below:

Jeremy Scott even featured Superman, Batman, and other comic elements in a quirky and bright way for his Fall 2011 collection:

The three superheroes I featured today are Wonder Woman, Ms. Marvel, and Power Girl.
Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman by abcDanah

Wonder Woman is probably most well-known to everyone, even those who do not follow comics. Born on Paradise Island to the race of Amazons, Wonder Woman is a princess, ambassador and warrior. A founding member of the Justice League of America, she uses her god-given powers to continuously fight for justice! She is definitely known as an inspirational and motivational character to female readers due to her independent and strong-willed personality.

Ms. Marvel

Ms. Marvel by abcDanah

After encountering Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers was accidentally subjected to otherworldly radiation that genetically transformed her into a superhuman warrior. From then on, she became known as Ms. Marvel and has since established herself as one of Marvel’s most powerful and prominent heroines. She went from being tough and independent to liberated and successful – what a fearless woman!

Power Girl

Power Girl by abcDanah

Power Girl is a Kryptonian member of the Justice Society of America. She is very tough as she has superman level abilities, although she is not exactly the sweetest of the lady superheroes. She’s known to be somewhat of a tomboy but still has a bit of seductive appeal. Tim Gunn states that she “owns” her look and he “believes this is who she is” by what she wears. I agree!
I know you want to go through your closet right now and put together
a heroic look… do it and share in the comments!
Who is your favorite superhero and why? Do you think there are
fashionable elements in superhero costumes or do you see them as
strictly reserved only for comic books?

  5. Absolutely love this post!! I have so many superhero tees and love to make it a theme in my outfits at times but I like that you show how to represent them without the outright symbol. I am definitely going to do my own take on this this coming week.
