I know, I know, it’s not Thursday but I totally missed out on doing my Three Ways to Wear series this past week so I had to feature it today! Last Wednesday, I displayed a list of clothing and accessories that were inspired by the sea and all things fantastical. Designers clearly took cues from The Little Mermaid, because it seemed like the realm of Ariel was the inspirational muse for everyone from Chanel to Alexander McQueen.
In Milan, Giorgio Armani had a subtle take on the trend with an entire collection featuring a pearlized palette (look at that iridescent skirt-suit above!) and watery shades from pale turquoise to deep, glimmering navy. Prints were mainly abstract, but evoked all things oceanic.
At Versace, Donatella went for a she-sells-seashells approach. Seahorses and shells were depicted on pencil skirts in gold studs, while prints showed mermaids, starfish and seashells in the a mythological way.
In Paris, Karl Lagerfeld transformed his beautiful models into Chanel sea creatures, with pearls pinned into their locks and adorning their faces, ears, and even backs. Dense ruffles on some dresses captured coral reefs, while simpler dresses were decorated with pale pigments.
Sarah Burton put her signature showstopping spin on the deep sea trend for the Alexander McQueen show, with bunches of bright coral on shoulders and necks, twirling strings of pearls, shell-like ripples on fabric, and metallic, flowing, scale-y gowns.
Are you inspired now? I sure am… if only we can wear looks like the ones above at any given time! That is what fashion week is about though – showcasing designs that are filled with creativity and innovation to have you inspired to try your own spin on the given trends.
Here are my three takes on wearing the Deep Sea trend.
I couldn’t decide on just one outfit for nighttime (I have that difficulty in real life, too). The first one features a gold medallion bodycon dress from TopShop, paired with sky-high platform sandals by Ivanka Trump, finished off with a black/gold cocktail ring from House of Harlow 1960 and a simple black clutch from missselfridge. I love black & gold combinations – both are classic colors and when paired together are incredibly attention-grabbing. The next nighttime look is more flirty, whimsical, and girly. I chose a deep coral subtly-embellished dress by TFNC paired with pewter glitter sandals from BCBG, finished off with an adorable matching star-shaped party bag from modcloth and a statement bangle by Marc by Marc Jacobs.
I’m slightly obsessed with this daytime look, featuring a marriage of bold aquatic colors and pearly, iridescent hues. This pearly, organza full skirt from TopShop is the perfect piece to dive right into a fantastical water world. I chose to pair it with a royal blue bralet top by Motel, oceanic seahorse sandals from missselfridge, a multilayer chain necklace from 2b and a sky blue carry-all bag from ASOS.
You can definitely showcase office-chic attire in an aquatic, under the sea way. I love coral pants right now (I just snagged a pair of cropped coral jeans by J Brand) like these trousers from Monsoon. In this look, I paired the pants with a navy blouse also from Monsoon and a pearl-embellished collar from romwe. Finish off the look with floral cluster studs by Betsey Johnson, pearl nude pumps from Zara, a deep blue handbag by Michael Kors and a pearly watch from Debenhams.
